Watching Sunset
by Richard Dinges, Jr.

    Alone among
    shadows, I sink
    into cushions
    and watch day wane
    through hard glass panes.
    My back complains
    at an awkward
    angle, a friend
    in this silence
    that keeps my eyes
    open, a witness
    to sun’s descent
    into what I know
    to be a long
    and windless night.
